Villa Marina: Rene Moore dies at 78;
was active community leader

Rene Moore, a Villa Marina resident and active community leader, died early Wednesday morning, February 19th. She was 78.

Interment was Sunday, February 23rd, at Hillside Memorial Park.

Moore was active in the Villa Marina Council, an association of owners of the 685 Villa Marina units, and in the Westchester-LAX/Marina del Rey Chamber of Commerce.

Recently, she was involved in efforts of Save Our Marina Hospital to keep the Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital open.

She was certified by the Los Angeles Fire Department as a Community Emergency Response Team member.

She moved to the local area from Pittsburgh, following her marriage in 1976 to Jim Moore, a computer researcher in linguistics.

In 1977, Rene Moore began The Calculating Lady, a consulting, tutoring, publishing and Web site creation and management business.

In September 1983, she was invited to lecture at Tainjin University in China, one of the world's oldest universities.

Born in Pittsburgh, she served 15 years as a bookkeeper for Dormont Appliance Center and managed her father's apartments.  She also worked with the Pittsburgh Credit Bureau and W.T. Grant, and was office manager of Schaffer Inc, a wholesale provider of small appliances.

State Sen. Debra Bowen honored Moore for her "exceptional volunteer spirit and devotion to making a difference in her community."

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son Jeff.

The family suggests donations may be made in her name to:
