Career

Self-Employed -- Consultant,  7/94 - present.

Currently, advise commercial customers and individuals on a wide variety of personal computing concerns – selecting hardware and software, installing/configuring these items and  training in their use.  Also instruct clients regarding their use of, and presence on the Internet.  Now actively composing/posting World Wide Web pages for commercial clients.  My Internet experience spans 35 years; my personal computing activities, 25 years.

IBM -- Senior Knowledge Engineer, Knowledge Engineering Services, 8/92 - 6/94.

Consulted for internal and external customers.  Advised and assisted clients with planning, initiating, deploying, evaluating and training users for Knowledge-Based projects.  Implemented Case-Based applications to add intelligence to Help Desk activities. 

IBM -- Senior Academic Discipline Specialist, Academic Information Systems, 4/90 - 7/92.

Technical and collegial interface between IBM and academia (Computer Science & Math).  Promoted IBM’s presence with trade shows, research grants and participating in accreditation organization. 

IBM -- Senior Scientific Staff, Los Angeles Scientific Center, 7/89 - 4/90.

Company-wide consultant and lecturer on Artificial Intelligence.  Initiated a project to explore the potential applications (many) of Artificial Intelligence to Geographic Information Systems.

IBM -- Senior Systems Strategy Administrator, Artificial Intelligence Project Office, 9/88 - 6/89.

Examined and assessed new technologies and advised upper IBM management on the roles they should have in the company's future.

IBM -- Artificial Intelligence Project, (assignment at Carnegie Mellon Univ.) 09/86 - 09/88.

Liaison between IBM and Carnegie Mellon University for their $5.5 million Artificial Intelligence joint study.  Cataloged, advertised and promoted CMU research within IBM. Lectured at IBM Scientific Centers in Europe and Middle East. 

IBM -- Advisory Scientific Staff, Los Angeles Scientific Center, 12/82 - 08/86.

Consultant to development of IBM's Expert System Environment product.  Senior scientist on the “L. A. Artificial Intelligence Project” where I led the research on robotic control, vision and natural-language.  Consulted and lectured at numerous IBM sites; spoke and advised on issues of ArtificialIntelligence and AI languages.  Lectured on LISP in Tokyo (IBM Japan) and Artificial Intelligence Principles in the Peoples Republic of China (Tianjin University).

USC/Information Sciences Institute -- Computer Science Research Staff, 6/73 - 6/82.

Conducted Natural Language research (developed both language understanding and generation systems) for DoD (Advanced Research Projects Agency). 

Discovered and published “Dialogue Games”, psycho-linguistic knowledge, inborn in humans, which facilitates the learning of language and use of it to effect multi-person communication and problem-solving.

 

Other Activities

Villa Toulon Homeowners Association, 1989 – current

Served on the board of our condominium association in various capacities, 3 years as president.

Villa Marina Council, 1997 -- current

Served on the Board as VP for years, recently elected president.  The Villa Marina Council is the association that is composed of all 18 condominiums in our neighborhood.  My role was as an internal organizer/communicator and external activist.  In the latter, I dealt with a wide variety of local politicians, commissions, councils, etc., promoting or opposing developmental activities which might affect our community.  Designed and maintain their web site: www.villamarinacouncil.com.

Save Our Marina Hospital, 5/2002 -- current

Helped found and direct this grass-roots effort to block the closure of our local (Marina del Rey) hospital by the second-largest healthcare company in the country.  (We won!)  Designed and maintain their web site: www.somh.org.

Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital, 10/2002 – current

Was appointed to the board to participate in the hospital’s management (same hospital as above) and represent the interests of the adjoining neighborhood.  Have nothing to do with their web site.
