A coalition formed to stop Tenet Healthcare Corp. from closing Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia is planning to hold a rally Tuesday in support of the East Falls medical center.

The organization, which is calling itself the "Save Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital Coalition," is comprised of community groups, health-care organizations, physicians, nurses, medical staff, emergency medical service workers, legislators and other political leaders.

The coalition's rally will begin at 12:30 p.m. at 15th and Market streets.

Tenet announced it was closing the historic 379-bed hospital earlier this month because of its mounting financial losses that had reached $5 million per month. The announcement came a day after the hospital had reached a tentative new contract with its nurses, who had been on strike for the previous five weeks.
